In a 4th grade classroom, it will be very important to create a clear set of rules, guidelines and expectations at the beginning of the year in order to keep the classroom running smoothly.
Below are examples of posters I could use to communicate what I expect from my students each day. I believe that virtues such as being respectful, safe and kind are the most important to instill in my future students, along with being a learner and working hard. I will use a day early on in the year to discuss expectations with my class, and ask them to describe and model what each expectation looks like in the classroom. Without respect, I will not be able to get through and relate to my students, and students will not feel safe to share their ideas in the classroom. Also, being a learner will be a main focus for my classroom because I believe that regardless of content, students will need skills to be able to learn on their own.
As far as rules, I will ask students to give their input in order to create a list of classroom rules. By involving them in the process of creating rules, students will most likely feel more responsible in following the rules throughout the year. I will ask students what rules they feel are needed in order for them to be successful in the classroom, then develop a list based on their ideas. In this way, I can help build classroom community as well as teach the concept of responsibility.
